Becca Cosmetics Apres Ski Glow Collection: Eye Lights Palette

October 4, 2017

For the Holidays, Becca Cosmetics has launched the Après Ski Glow Collection Eye Lights Palette ($45 / 7 x 0.05 oz – 1.4 g). Featuring Becca’s iconic Shimmering Skin Perfector Highlighter formula customized specifically for the eyes, the limited-edition palette includes five shades inspired by their best-selling highlighters; Opal, Topaz, Moonstone, Rose Quartz and Pearl – plus, two Holiday inspired shades, Toasted Marshmellow and Hot Cocoa.

Becca’s cult favorite Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighters are known, if not famous, for their smooth creamy texture, impeccable pigment and color payoff, are effortless to blend and diffuse, and of which the lasting power is nothing short of incredible. Unfortunately, only some of these superior qualities translated fully to the Après Ski Glow Collection Eye Lights Palette. Initially I was really blown away by the colors themselves when I first opened the palette. The shimmers look absolutely stunning, and the overall appearance of the palette led me to believe it would become a great basic palette mixing some of my favorite Becca highlighter shades, but in eye format. In comparison to the highlighters, the textures of the eyeshadows are quite dry and powdery. While there is some degree of pigment, the colors are not as opaque as one would expect from an eyeshadow formula, instead they sheer out quite significantly to portray a more subtle and soft look. Blending or diffusing can be quite a challenge depending on the shade since when attempting to blend one shade with another, the blending shade virtually completely overtakes the base shade, or erases it all-together. The eyeshadows did somewhat cooperate better once I dampened my brush, there was a tad more color adhering to the lids and the powders seemed to layer a little easier. Lasting power is medium at best, wearing a solid five – six hours before fading significantly.

A look at the color selection and descriptions as I see them

  • Pearl – is a warm, pale white gold and has a satin finish. This shade has semi- opaque coverage and sheers out into a semi- sheer finish
  • Rose Quartz – is a warm, light to medium peachy pink with subtle pink and yellow undertones and has a shimmer finish infused with specks of gold. This shade has semi- opaque coverage and sheers out into a semi- sheer finish
  • Moonstone – is a warm, light gold with yellow undertones and has a shimmer finish. This shade contains more pigment initially and has sheer to light coverage, however sets into a semi- sheer finish once blending comes into play
  • Opal – is a warm, light to medium gold with yellow undertones and has a shimmer finish. This shade has semi- opaque coverage and sheers out into a semi- sheer finish
  • Topaz – is a warm, medium bronzed gold with yellow undertones and has a shimmer finish. Is one of the better performing shades as it has quite a rich level of pigmentation in it, plus felt so much more smoother than the rest.
  • Toasted Marshmellow – is a warm, medium golden brown with yellow undertones and has a satin sheen finish. This shade has semi- opaque coverage that sets into a sheer finish and was perhaps one of the most difficult to work with as it did not want to build nor stick to the lid
  • Hot Cocoa – is a warm, medium to dark brown with reddish undertones and has a satin sheen finish. Another well-performing shade as it had much more pigmentation and felt smoother as well like Topaz. That being said this color was almost impossible to blend or diffuse

Swatched on the arm. Initially straight out the palette using a finger the pigments are much more concentrated. However, when applied to the eyes using various brushes, including denser ones, the colors sheer out significantly.

Bottom line, I really wanted to be head-over-heels for the Après Ski Glow Collection Eye Lights Palette, but unfortunately the formula is just not for me. The concept and intent behind it were absolutely well meant, however, the execution leaves something to the imagination. I do use the palette on days when I need just a quick wash of color over the eyes – that being said, I am slightly disappointed that I’m not able to utilize the palette as an everyday go-to or for something more substantial, especially since it’s so beautiful to look at. If you have been eyeing this palette, I’d say invest in their actual Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighters and use those for the eyes instead – anywhere from the texture to pigment and finish, all of it is out of this world incredible and so worth the money. I’m a big fan of Becca products and own quite a well-rounded library of most of their collections, the Après Ski Glow Collection Eye Lights Palette was simply just a miss for me.

Reading the reviews on Sephora, it has come to my attention that they are very mixed. Half loves the palette, the other half is in the same boat I am. I ordered my palette when Sephora was hosting a special VIB Rouge event to preview and purchase their Holiday selections early. Perhaps this first batch had a few misfires in the mix? I’m not entirely sure but I will definitely monitor the coming in reviews from here on out to see what the majority vote turns out to be.

Have any of you babes purchased this palette? If so, what are your thoughts on it?
