For Fall 2018, Hourglass has launched the Scattered Light Glitter Eye Shadow ($29 / 0.12 oz – 3.5 g) and Caution Extreme Lash Mascara ($29 / 0.33 oz/ 9.4 g). The collection sold out almost immediately just about everywhere but I was fortunate enough to purchase them on their launch date from Beautylish. I ordered both the mascara as well as four out of the five eyeshadows sight unseen and have been playing with them for the last few weeks. The collection appears to be all about the glow with multi-dimensional finishes and textures. From what I’ve seen so far online, this upcoming Fall season is going to be heavy on the eyes and I’m so here for it!
Up first are the Scattered Light Glitter Eye Shadows. I purchased all the shades with the exception of Aura, which is a pink shade. Long-time readers know that I try to avoid pink-based eye as well as highlight colors at all cost since they tend to wash me out pretty badly. The Scattered Light Glitter Eye Shadows are weightless, refined glitter eyeshadows infused with light-reflecting pearls to create high impact, sparkling eyes. The unique hybrid cream formula creates reflective, buildable dimension for everything from a delicate glimmer to an intense, prismatic finish. These have a super creamy feel, are easy to blend, and they layer quite beautifully with other colors including powder formulas. Since it is not an actual cream-based formula, there is no stickiness and creasing with the application. It’s eyeshadow powder finely milled and pressed into the plastic jar with a plastic stopper to repress the consistency after each use. These are absolutely STUNNING! They apply so effortlessly and give the most beautiful, sophisticated glow without looking childish or cheap.
The Scattered Light Glitter Eye Shadows have a more finely milled glitter and don’t feel heavy on the lids at all. They are very soft to the touch and buildable so it allows you to dictate how subtle or intense you want the finish to be. The shadows apply more pigmented by way of finger application, but blend out nicely for sheerer coverage or as a topper with a brush. For me these are best applied with the fingers dabbed onto the lids. Naturally there is some sort of fallout but can be kept to a minimum when applied to a tacky base like a good eye primer or even concealer. On my lids, with foundation or concealer as a base, they last all day without budging as long as I don’t rub my eyes. They feel truly weightless and have the most beautiful shimmer.
If you’re concerned about the degree of sparkle with these it would be safe to say that if you’re conservative about shimmer or glitter, than these may not be for you. However, the shimmer/glitter is very refined and gives a sophisticated glow to the eyes that is wonderfully versatile and wearable. It’s grownup glitter, if you will. The formula is reflective and iridescent. Don’t let the glitter deter you, these are fantastically exquisite. The word “glitter” had me initially a little worried, especially ordering sight unseen. I love a good shimmer but sometimes “glitter” can be too much for what I’m comfortable wearing. Although these are quite sparkly, they are not too glittery for me and I love wearing them alone, layered over shadow, or layered together.
A look at the color selection and descriptions as I see them
Blaze – is a warm, medium to dark copper with a reddish undertone and has a sparkly sheen finish
Foil – is a warm, light to medium gold with yellow undertones and has a sparkly metallic sheen
Reflect – is a warm, light champagne beige with rosy undertones and has a metallic sheen
Smoke – is a warm, medium taupe with brown and silver undertones and has a sparkly metallic finish
Last I have the new Caution Extreme Lash Mascara. This is a all-in-one mascara that promises to deliver delivers endless length, intense volume and sky-high lift for extreme, dramatic lashes. This mascara is quite amazing. I love the brush as it separates all of my lashes and fans them out without having to go back and pick them apart individually. It gives lashes good volume, length, and intense color without clumping, flaking or smudging. However, just with any mascara, if you overdo it lashes will clump together. I did notice a couple of times that the curl fell out of my lashes while wearing this mascara. My lashes are naturally wimpy so it doesn’t take a lot for that to happen. A solution is to layer different formulas to make another work. The mascara does look really beyond amazing when on the eyes. It has lasted through both the extreme dry heat as well as monsoon season with pressing humidity here in Vegas without any issues.
Bottom line, not so surprising but this launch has a lot to love and I love every single item! Everything was 100% worth the splurge. If I had to narrow down my picks I would choose Reflect and Smoke, aside from the Caution Extreme Lash Mascara. The shadows are on the sparkly side but they look so stunning on the eyes, especially Smoke which will definitely be a frequent favorite come the Fall season.
