Recently Smashbox teamed up with Youtuber Nicol Concilio to bring limited edition scented versions of their Photo Finish Primer Water. Available in three summery blends, including: So Chill Cocount, Serene Greens and Centering Citrus, the three-in-one face primer and setting sprays are infused with electrolytes formulated to boost both your makeup and your mood. I’m a lover of all things coconut and a long-time fan of Smashbox base makeup, their Iconic Photofinish Foundation Primer has been a staple of mine for many years, so I could not resist picking up the So Chill Coconut Photo Finish Primer Water. It’s was a first for me to test their Photo Finish Primer Water formula. I tried it three ways, as an all over face primer, a setting spray and as a refreshing misting spray and found it to be one of the better do-it-all base products I’ve tried. I usually don’t like multi-use products in certain categories because most of the time they don’t deliver on a majority of their claims. I’ve always found Smashbox base makeup to be excellent in quality, functionality and performance. The Photo Finish Primer Water x Nicol Concilio is no exception.
The So Chill Coconut Photo Finish Primer Water is a refreshing, cooling mist that soothes skin, adds radiance, and delivers lasting hydration. It instantly absorbs into the skin and as a primer smooths out the complexion prepping it for makeup application without added oil, shine or stickiness. To apply as a primer you spritz it all over the face like you would with setting. For me it does give the perfect amount of product, albeit sheer and find it better for those elusive low/no-makeup days or when I’m in a hurry and don’t have time to go through all the steps. For the everyday I prefer an actual primer since my complexion needs blurring and correcting of surface texture issues, plus pores. While the water does a great job at smoothing out and evening the skintone, it doesn’t blur imperfections nor minimizes pores to the degree of what I personally need it to be. This would suffice as a great primer for someone who doesn’t have that many or severe skin concerns.
As a setting and face mist this is super hydrating and revitalizing. I love spraying this on my skin as a refreshing pick-me-up throughout the day. It works amazing as a setting spray as it keeps my makeup in place without allowing areas to become greasy or oily. It gives a nice glow to the face and I even spray it on my Beautyblender for in between applications like concealer or another cream complexion product. Much the same way as I use MAC Fix+. Finish-wise it’s not heavy feeling nor does it leave a film.
Bottom line, this is a win in my book although I do wish the coconut scent was a little stronger. I was kind of disappointed about how faint it was since I’m such a lover of coconut-scented products. Still my favorite scented setting spray is Marc Jacobs Beauty Re(cover) Perfecting Coconut Setting Mist since it carries a sweet coconut scent with a hint of salt water. So yummy. That being said the So Chill Coconut Photo Finish Primer Water is a solid performer as an actual base product. It doesn’t work for me as a primer for normal makeup days since my complexion needs are a little high maintenance, but rather for low to no-makeup days as well as a setting and face mist. Despite being scented, I did not experience any irritation nor reaction. Even though I have normal/dry skin that is not sensitive to fragrant products, sometimes I will meet my match and it leaves me itching with red bumps for days.
Have you tried any of the new Photo Finish Primer Waters? What are your thoughts?
