Smashbox Super Fan Mascara

April 4, 2018

It’s very rare that I write single review posts on mascara, but when I do it’s usually because I have found a formula + wand combination that has almost quite literally blown my mind. Or shook, as the kids say these days. Since its launch, people have been raving about the new Smashbox Super Fan Mascara ($19 / 0.33 oz – 10 mL) that I feel like it has already reached cult-status in the beauty world. Like most, I’m super picky about mascara so it takes quite a bit to win me over and whip my almost pin straight, low density, can’t hold onto a curl to save their lives, lashes right into shape. The amount of love that the Super Fan Mascara continues to receive put this right on my radar and of course I had to investigate for myself to find out just what the hype is all about. Spoiler alert: this stuff is AMAZING!

The Smashbox Super Fan Mascara is a lengthening mascara that promises modern, fanned-out volume without any heaviness or clumping. Featuring a 360Β° Precision double-bristle brush, it loads product from root to tip. This literally was a solid and out loud WOW with the first try. It’s everything I want in a mascara – volume, definition, does not smudge, does not flake, does not clump, and holds the curl. The formula is super pigmented with an ultra deep, rich color that dries down to a true black and does not lighten to an ashy gray as the day goes on. Initially I was concerned that the rubber brush would make it difficult to coat my lashes, but it actually does a great job and literally fans the lashes out distributing product fully and evenly while separating lashes. The brush design and small bristles allows me to get to the base of the lashes without touching the skin and reach those stubborn tiny ones in the corners. Product goes on so smooth and gives me so much length, volume, and even lifts my lashes.

For someone like myself who is not blessed with long nor a lot of lashes, this mascara made all the difference even though it’s not as striking as the before-and-afters I have seen on Sephora – granted, many of those who posted demos already had naturally long or a lot of lashes so yes, the results for them are absolutely out of this world and it looks like they’re wearing falsies. Going into testing this mascara, I had to be realistic with myself and face that those results would not be bestowed upon me but instead would give me the results that are more targeted for someone who has thin, straight and short lashes. In all, the formula works for me because it does give my lashes an amazing boost more than most mascaras can.

A closer look at the brush

Here’s a quick before and after. I apologize for the photo quality, I’m still trying to figure out the lighting situation and camera settings in order to properly take these types of demo images.

Bottom line, 100% love! There’s only been a handful of times when a formula impressed me as much as the Super Fan Mascara did because it actually performs as it promises. It gives a lengthening and volumized effect with good staying power. It has zero clumping, does not flake nor smudge. The overall consistency is quite wet. Having lived in Vegas my whole life I find that storing certain products like mascara in a cool, dark place prevents it from becoming so runny that it is not workable. Any type of heat can affect a product’s performance and alter its formula to an extend so it’s force of habit for me to store it out of sight and away from the heat/sun. Doing this always does the trick and keeps any mascara application from ever being messy. This is my new favorite go-to mascara! I was unsure of the brush at first, however, it works perfectly and really contributes to that “falsie” effect. It lifts and darkens, making my lashes look long and full. I am extremely happy with the results and give it two thumbs up!

Have you tried this mascara yet? What are your thoughts?
