Makeup Spring 2018

The Spring Makeup Bag

March 12, 2018

Now that Spring is literally around the corner, everything from makeup and skincare to my wardrobe and home have already gone through a bit of an update. I’m obsessed with fresh, pretty neutrals for Spring as well as a glowing complexion, so for me the easiest way to update my daily beauty looks is to focus on brighter colors and base enhancers. Aside from tried-and-true favorites, there are some new launches that I’ve been mixing into my repertoire since they were released and today I am sharing some colors and items I think will be perfect for the Spring transition.

Up first I have quite a few base enhancers starting with highlighters since they are my weakness! I have an unhealthy obsession with the Tom Ford Orchid Soleil Nightbloom Powder (reviewed + swatched here) since it launched in December. This was a super limited edition release (still available at Neiman Marcus as of now) and I purchased a backup for whenever I run out of this one. Even though I own a ton of highlighters, I find this one unique in color as well as formula. Leave it up to Tom Ford to create a $80 highlighter that literally turns out to be the most perfect neutral tone of all time – only to make it limited edition! Soleil Bloom is a warm, light to medium champagne with rosy undertones and has a semi- metallic finish. For me this is literally a dreamboat color and I can’t get enough of how the powder adheres lightly to the skin for a beautiful glow with natural-looking opaque coverage.

New from Nars are the Easy Glowing Cheek Palettes (reviewed + swatched here), and they have steadily become my go-to cheek palettes of the moment to wear on the face as well as the eyes. In particular Rêve Salé. The powder formula has a super soft, unique texture that almost takes on life as a cream and has rich pigment that is easy to blend. I absolutely love these palettes and consider them both to be must-haves.

MAC released the Hyper Real Glow Palettes (reviewed + swatched here) last month and it was love at first swatch. Both palettes are gorgeous and the shades have an ultra-reflective, super smooth sheen that effortlessly blend into the skin beautifully without emphasizing pores or texture. All six shades range from semi- opaque to opaque and have soft, creamy textures that are easy to use. While I love everything gold, perhaps my most-used out of the two is Flash + Awe since the colors actually run like rose gold on my medium skin without that strong pink undertone. It’s been difficult for years to find a true rose gold in either eyeshadows or highlighters since they always pull more as a frosty pink on me than anything else.

A MAC classic I recently rekindled with is the Extra Dimension Skinfinish in Superb (reviewed + swatched here). The MAC Extra Dimensions are among my top favorite entities from the brand. They are beautiful, lightweight powders that effortlessly blend into the skin for either a intense and luminous glow or diffused for a more sheered out finish. Superb is a stunning shade of soft champagne nude with peach undertones and looks amazing on the skin. Such a Spring-y color.

For cheeks I have been rotating between Nars Bumpy Ride (reviewed + swatched here), Marc Jacobs Beauty Kinks & Kisses and Hourglass Incandescent Electra (reviewed + swatched here) as well as Pure Effect which is part of the Volume 3 Ambient Lighting Edit (no longer for sale). The latter has the prettiest soft luminous sheen translated through a bright, warm pink that I can’t get enough of. I love the color and formula so much I am crossing my fingers super hard that Hourglass will release an individual blush compact of it.

If you’re the bronzer-loving type like myself than the Anastasia Beverly Hills Powder Bronzers (reviewed + swatched here) will be right up your alley as they’re a great matte option for those who don’t prefer shimmer. They come in six versatile colors with a natural matte finish. The bronzers have an ultra soft yet dense texture and feel almost creamy but not quite. They blend beautifully and evenly into the skin and the colors instantly warm up the complexion with a smooth, natural finish for an effortless sunkissed look. If you do like a bit of shimmer in your bronzer than MAC’s Global Glow is one of the prettiest bronze shades I own. It has a nice glowy effect and I wear it on the both the face as well as the eyes.

Next are the eyes. My most-used eyeshadow palette of all time is Nude Dip by Tom Ford. This is a classically timeless neutral palette with a color combination suitable for the everyday as well as evening that is equally elegant as it is modern. The shades are so easy to wear since they compliment each other flawlessly, and while the colors are shimmery they are super refined and wearable. Texture is quite unique, soft, almost creamy that gives this deep, flattering multi-dimensional look to the eyes with very rich pigment and long-lasting quality.

Lastly are lips. I have already started to take a greater liking to more lightweight formulas, like those with a lip balm feel. So far I’ve been loving the Tom Ford Ultra-Shine Lip Color in Bare new from his 2018 Summer Soleil collection (review coming soon!). It’s a 3-1 glossy, creamy lip formula that combines the easy, one-stroke application of a lipstick, the high-shine finish of a lip gloss, and the rich emollient feel of a lip balm. Bare is literally the perfect everyday nude that you don’t even need a mirror to apply since it’s so effortless.

There are a few actual lipsticks I’ve been fussing over. Of course one of them is the Marc Jacobs Le Marc Lip Crème in Cream and Sugar (review + swatches of the mini trio here). Aside from the holy grail formula that is the Le Marc Lip Crème line, the color is a to die for nude pink that I have looking for forever. It flatters my complexion so well and I’ve been basically wearing it non-stop since.

Another lip color that I’ve been loving is the MAC Liptensity Lipstick in Driftwood. I got this as a free GWP with my Hyper Real Glow order and surprisingly fell in love with it despite that I thought the color was too pale for my skintone at first. The best I can describe the color is that looks like a mauve nudish pink. This one has a nice rich pigment with a smooth, creamy texture offering full coverage without feeling thick although they aren’t necessarily weightless. There’s no hydrating feel but they also did not dry out my lips and feel comfortable once on. Lasting power is really good and it stays put for a long time without fading as long as nothing touches your lips.

Naturally the 2017 nude Lip Color shade extensions (reviewed + swatched here) from Tom Ford have to be included, no explaining needed.

My lips survived Winter which means I can finally start wearing lip gloss again! My most-used lip glosses are the Nars Velvet Lip Glides in Stripped, Unlaced and Suck (full details here). The Velvet Lip Glide formula marries the comfortable lightweight cloak of a lip gloss and the finish of a lipstick. The Velvet Lip Glides are highly saturated, richly pigmented lip colors that provide ultimate hydration and long-lasting wear. They have a smooth, non-sticky consistency with a weightless feel that glides product effortlessly onto the lips achieving strong color coverage in just a few swipes. Their finish is described as a “semi-matte”, but on initial swipe they maintain a creamy sheen until about hour 3 where the finish develops into a velvety one instead.

That wraps it up for my first Spring beauty roundup! I have more testing in skincare, SPF, and other beauty-related items to finish up testing so I will be rolling out more roundups in the coming weeks. Do you change your routines as a new season rings in? What colors/items are part of your Spring makeup bag?
