Aside from clocking out after a long day on my feet, perhaps my absolute most favorite time of the day is prepping for bed at night. There’s nothing like stepping into my woman cave (aka, the bathroom), light a candle, take a shower and then go to work on my face applying toner, essence and all that good stuff before I jump into bed. Being a beauty junkie, however, does not end at the bathroom door so naturally I need to have certain things within arms reach on my bedside table to seamlessly help me wind down at night.
First and foremost, I always keep a candle, of course. Most of you already know I love a good candle but the one I keep next to my bed is not necessarily for burning purposes as much as it is for aroma therapy. A proper candle emits scent without a flame ever so much as dancing near it, albeit it does not veil the entire room it does dust my area in its soothing notes which in return helps me shut my mind off quicker and aides in keeping me sleeping through the night. Manly Indulgence Black Tuxedo candle (purchased from Homegoods) is a home fragrance I’ve been utterly obsessed with lately. So much in fact that when I walk by it I will pick it up just to smell it. With notes of white musk, lavender and cedarwood it’s masculine yet at once holds a subtle feminine sweetness that is both relaxing as well as invigorating. All-in-all, the notes perform effortlessly together creating a relaxing atmosphere.
I have a few beauty essentials that I like to keep on my nightstand as the final steps in my routine. All of them are nested in a small white bowl I purchased from Marshalls a little while ago. First I will dab on a dime-sized amount of the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask. This has been a long-time staple of mine. When it first came out I received a sample of this and was immediately blown away by how nourishing it was. Needless to say the full-size was ordered promptly after that initial experience. It’s ultra hydrating and plumps the lips. Consistency is a little bit on the thick side but with dabbing of the ring finger all over to disperse product solves that issue. The formula itself is really effective, almost instantly healing dry and chapped lips while it also naturally plumps the lips without any irritation. I use this mask every single night. When I start my post-shower routine, one of the first things I do is exfoliate my lips with MAC Lip Scrubtious and apply the Agave mask afterwards. How my lips feel afterwards is absolutely indescribable, they are so soft, so smooth and lush. This mask is a really good overnight treatment when your lips are in crisis mode.
After allowing the mask to absorb, this is usually when I will read a book chapter or two, I swipe on some of the Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment. This ultra-hydrating lip treatment corrects and conditions lips for a smooth, youthful-looking finish and is scientifically proven to repair the lips – significantly boosting moisture, enhancing volume, and improving the definition of the lip area. I have been using this for years after I started noticing that both my vermilion border as well as my oral commisures started to become affected by years of cigarette smoking. With persistent use over a long course I can honestly say that both issues have been virtually resolved, my vermilion border is just now starting to catch up but that is also thanks in part of kicking the habit for good. I cannot rave about this balm enough. It has a general thin consistency that genuinely moisturizes your lips so that you don’t have to reapply all day. I personally use this as my everyday overnight treatment in combination with the Agave Mask. Once I wake up my lips feel incredibly healthy, super soft, smooth and not to mention conditioned and hydrated. This is my go-to for life, no joke.
A hand cream is an absolute must, especially with the condition my hands tend to be in sometimes due to work. I use the Ahava Dead Sea Mineral Hand Cream as my daily overnight treatment when my hands are in normal shape. The formula has a rich emollient texture that while absorbs quickly does kind of feel greasy even after allowing it to soak in for 15 minutes. This is a super moisturizing cream that I use for nighttime only as it is a bit too heavy for daytime for my taste. By morning my hands feel soft, refreshed and revitalized. When my hands are at their driest and includes skin splits, I use the H20 Plus Specialty Care Hand & Nail Cream for daytime while I use the Ahava solely for nighttime. The Dead Sea Mineral Hand Cream is formulated with Allantoin which heals dry cracked skin and blemishes. It smells quite pleasant but is not overpowering.
On my days off, before I leap out of bed to hole myself up in my office for the next 10 hours or more blogging away, I liberally spritz my face with the L’Occitane Immortelle Precious Mist as an impromptu yet super refreshing wakeup call. This mist is enriched with Immortelle floral water, aimed to moisturize and revitalize the skin instantly. L’Occitane’s Immortelle line is more preventative in treatment for emerging wrinkles and this mist leaves my skin looking very radiant and supple all the while feeling super hydrated and refreshed. This spray has a soothing, subtle floral scent as found in other Immortelle products. I like that it is gentle and is one of my favorite pick-me-ups for throughout the day.
I just recently started to get into slowly breaking the habit of being on my phone while in bed and substitute answering emails with reading a book. While I’ve been successful in doing so, bad habits are hard to break. For the most part I like to keep it light but do enjoy most genres. Currently my stash includes Gotti’s Rules: The Story of John Alite, Junior Gotti, and the Demise of the American Mafia – which I’m in the process of reading, and in queue are I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual and DVF’s The Woman I Wanted To Be.
A final essential is this Tea Tree Mint spray from Moonlit Beauty (found at Marshalls). One of my personal downfalls is as soon as I jump into bed, I’m either right back on my phone or toss and turn for an hour because I’m running everything I need to do the next day through my head. On days where I’m particularly stressed or wound up, I will spritz my pillows with this spray to help calm me down and ease my mind. I find tea tree wonderfully relaxing and most times doing this has helped me fall asleep faster and actually stay asleep during the night.
