End of Summer Favorites

September 1, 2017

Fall is just around the corner but it’s not even close to being on my mind right now. For the beauty industry, new collections launch ahead of season and many brands have already started to update their selections for the cooler weather ahead. Me personally, I love to wear Summery shades year round alongside incorporating Summer-based elements to add bits of warmth and life to the everyday. I’m not always necessarily that fond of the cooler seasons even though it’s a nice break from the scorching dry heat we’ve just experienced here the last couple of months – so, I like to include little Summer reminders into my routines whether that be through color, formula or scent. Today I’m sharing my Summer beauty favorites and essentials that I discovered a while back or within the recent weeks covering a bit of everything from makeup to fragrance. Most, if not all, of the following will end up in my Fall and Winter routines in one or way another due to their incredible versatility. Up first are makeup must-haves:

An amazing new addition to my makeup repertoire has been the Urban Decay Naked Heat Palette (reviewed here). The colors are simply breathtaking, this coming from someone who does neutrals only and the palette offers a nice balance between safer neutrals as well as more bolder, richer colors that are on a completely new level. Albeit the textures in this palette while substantial seem a bit drier than prior Naked palettes, yet are quite strongly pigmented with semi- to full opaque coverage depending on the color, also are very blendable as well as buildable. Much to my surprise, I ended up totally falling in love with this palette. The warm, sultry nature harmonizes so beautifully with my skin tone that I seriously can’t get enough of it. I give this palette two huge thumbs up.

Long-time readers know that Tom Ford Cream & Powder Eye Color in Paradiso (reviewed here) has become a staple of mine this season. His cream shadows are so easy to use and convenient to apply. I simply just smudge and blend with a finger for a gorgeous all over wash of color. In terms of a proper bronze shade, Nars Velvet Shadow Stick in Siros (reviewed here) is my all-time favorite in the cream formula category. It’s a to-die-for shimmering bronze with a small touch of gold. I like to wear this on its own or layered with other bronze-like tones or even gold colors.

All things sheer and light in the lip department. While most of the time I would wear the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15, on days where I wanted some color but lightweight application I would opt for the Tom Ford Clutch-Size Lip Balms in L’Odissea and Cruising (reviewed here).

For the complexion I love glowing skin, always. As a color base, the Natasha Denona Face Glow Foundation (reviewed here) has been my ride or die since the beginning of July once my tan started to become deeper in tone. This foundation is one of top favorites for both its coverage as well as perfectly matching color – my is shade 45 Medium-Neutral. This is a luminous foundation as it leaves a natural, dewy effect on the skin and is a long-lasting light to medium coverage foundation that works very well in the heat. Initially out the tube the foundation is light but is buildable to achieve a medium finish.

I wear bronzer year round. While I may veer to a different formulation, the colors and finishes truly never change that much. If you ask me what bronzer I would recommend, it would be a very difficult decision for me considering that picks have been slim throughout both Spring as well as Summer. Usually brands bombard the market with bronzers especially in aforementioned seasons since traditionally it’s a trend, this year has been different though and I found the choices very lackluster to the point of bone dry. While I’ve been relying heavily on cream formulations to get me through another 110+ degree day, every once in a while I switched it up to the Becca Sunlit Bronzer in Bronzed Bondi (reviewed here). The Sunlit Bronzers are quite unique in formula. They look and feel almost creamy but are clearly powders – that is because each of the beach-hued bronzers were created using Becca’s iconic Shimmering Skin Perfector formula that is custom-made with subtle shimmer, and it blends pigments with liquids which give them their creamy feel. One swipe offers impressive pigment and the powder’s silky texture allows you to customize your glow to either go from subtly sunkissed to a just-stepped-off-the-beach bronze.

Although Nars Laguna Bronzer is timeless.

For a little glow and color on the cheeks, Nars Liquid Blush in Orgasm (reviewed here) is hands down the best liquid blush I’ve tried. It’s subtle but has the most gorgeous color. Even though the Orgasm powder blush is a cult classic in itself, I almost want to say that the liquefied version is better.

Last but not least is highlighter. Highlighters is something I simply cannot choose between, I have quite a few amazing cream and liquid formulas that have captured my heart. That being said, I didn’t want to go through every single one for this post so I based my pick on how often I reach for it – hands down this is the Marc Jacobs Dew Drops (reviewed here). This is a gorgeous, warm golden-peach gel-cream hybrid complexion luminizer that pairs hydrating skincare ingredients with instant illumination. On days when I reach for this illuminator, I apply this both as a standalone highlighter and mix it in with my primer as well. Doing this provides a beautiful cohesive lit-from-within glow that is so fluid that it almost brings a tear to my eye. Exaggerating, of course, but you know what I mean!

Next up are some items for the skin, hair and body. The Farmacy Green Screen Daily Environmental Protector Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen with Echinacea GreenEnvy has been my ride or die since about a little before Spring. It has a creamy texture and white color but doesn’t leave a white film on the face. This one is free of skin-irritating chemicals and has a soothing feel. It’s formulated to shield the skin from overexposure to sunlight and pollution. It also helps guard against free radicals emitted from smart phones and computers, which can lead to accelerated photo aging. It’s light allowing skin to breathe, non-greasy, non-comedogenic, does not pill and dries down to a semi- matte finish working very well alone or under makeup. For my skin who likes to misbehave every now and then, this is one of most gentle yet effective physical sunscreens I’ve tried.

For fragrance, I fell utterly in love with the Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Crush Body Fragrance Mist. This body mist is to die for! If you’re obsessed with the Bum Bum Cream like I am, this smells JUST like it. It’s that perfect sweet, sexy and sultry Summer fragrance that indeed feels like it instantly transports you to the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. An absolute must if you love other parts of this collection. I’m pretty traditional when it comes to fragrance and stick to standard perfumes only, but this body mist has completely changed the game since the scent is so universal and flattering. Tropical? Yes, but honestly, who doesn’t want to smell like a beach vacation year round?

Caudalie’s Grape Water has been absolutely essential to me this Summer. It’s a great treatment for calming certain skin concerns like soothing rosacea, reducing redness and sensitivity, and calming rashes. If I know that I’m going to be exposed to the heat and sun for a while in advance, this is the spray I keep in my bag to refresh throughout the day. Rich in moisturizing polysaccharides, mineral salts, and potassium, Grape Water provides an immediate benefit of improved hydration and diminished skin sensitivity upon use. According to Caudalie, this is also suitable for sensitive skin but since I cannot attest to that fact I suggest doing a test run in stores first to make sure you will not experience any reactions. Caudalie Grape Water is one of the best refreshing toner mists that I have ever tried. This toner is perfect for dry heat as well as humidity and helps calm, hydrate and soothe the skin.

Verb’s Ghost Oil has been both a game changer and saving grace keeping my hair from turning into perpetual straw due to sun exposure and severe dry heat. Ghost Oil is a transparent, restorative hair oil that revitalizes hair from roots to ends. The formula features an integrated moringa oil blend that coats the hair shaft with essential nutrients. This can be applied to both damp or dry hair. I personally love to work this through dry hair every single day. Literally after the first use my hair felt noticeably softer and so much smoother. Its very light and weightless but has incredible results. Hair looks healthier, shines brighter and I truly feel that it keeps the heat from drying out my strands, especially the ends.

Since I’m completely heating tool abstinent, the Verb Sea Spray has been and will be a great asset to my no-heat styling game. This gives my fine and flat hair a little more volume by crafting loose waves that last all day. Formulated with nourishing ingredients like sunflower seed extract, quinoa protein and kelp, Verb’s Sea Spray soaks up excess oils for soft, tousled hair while offering UV protection guarding against dryness, color fading, and brassiness. As far as formula is concerned, Verb managed to bottle the beach which is quite evident not just in performance, but in scent as well as it is heavenly!

For the best beach hair possible, my favorite thing to do is wash my hair and then slightly pat dry it before spritzing the Sea Spray all over. Taking two fingers, I kind of twist and coil my hair in either small to medium sections to properly work the product in. Once that is done, I plop my hair into a hair turban before going to sleep. When I remove the turban in the morning, it’s like my hair stepped straight out of a commercial because holy volume and beach curl! I do this at least twice a week and receive so many compliments on how shiny my hair looks and how amazing it smells.

Protecting your skin all year long with a sunscreen that lasts is important. Living in Vegas, you attempt to practice safe sun protection throughout all four seasons. One that I’ve sworn by since before Spring is the Coola Sport Continuous Spray SPF 30 in Tropical Coconut. This is a lightweight spray that provides an even spritz of mist in a continuous spray and contains quite a bit of great skin benefiting properties. It does have alcohol in it which you can smell when you spray it on the skin, but the scent disappears quickly and you’re left with the sweet coconut scent. The fact that it’s spray-on is amazing for easy on-the-go application or to reach the backside area. It’s non-drying, non-irritating and leaves a nice, moisturized finish on the skin.

I hope you enjoyed this Summer beauty favorites roundup! As always, I would love to hear about your favorites so please share them below in the notes!
