Tom Ford Beauty 2017 Summer Soleil Collection | Sheer Highlighting Duo + Clutch-Size Lip Balm in Cruising & L’Odissea

March 2, 2017

Tom Ford celebrates the anticipated arrival of the Spring and Summer seasons with a new edition of his exotically branded Summer Soleil Collection. Inspired by remote private islands where the season lasts all year and one day seamlessly blends into the next, the warm sun-drenched range is back yet again featuring the signature luxe white and gold packaging housing new sensuous shades as well as some very exciting product innovations. The gorgeous new 2017 Soleil color collection embodies the endless pursuit of radiant Summer skin sessions and luxury with a tropical lineup of bronzers, highlighters, eyeshadows, skincare and more including the limited edition Soleil Clutch-Size Lip Balms. The collection was up for pre-order on the official Tom Ford website a few weeks back and has since gone live on Sephora. My pre-order shipped sooner than expected and personal first impressions are all very good. Some items that were released last season have been repromoted for this season with an updated formula but same shade names, like The Ultimate Bronzer ($110 each / 0.74 oz) available in three color harmonies: Terra, Gold Dust and Bronze Age. Even though I didn’t review any items from the last Soleil collection, for this year’s volume I decided to base my picks on his newest product innovations which include the Sheer Highlighting Duo as well as two shades from the limited edition Clutch-Size Soleil Lip Balms.

The Sheer Highlighting Duo in Reflects Gilt ($78 /  0.1 oz – 3 g) has two shimmering highlighting colors in one large mirrored compact. The colors, a rose and yellow bronze gold, are inspired by the sunrise and sunset to give a light-reflective finish to bronzed Summer skin. The versatile compact introduces a wet/dry formula that can be used as a face and cheek highlighter as well as a luminous eyeshadow. Apply the vibrant colors wet for a soft veil of color or dry for a high-impact pigmented wash (although in my opinion it’s vice versa as the colors become much more pigmented when wet). The texture has a powder finish but an almost creamy feel to it. The surface is embossed with a cross-hatch pattern often found in Tom Ford face compacts. Application for this is smooth and easy to blend. Pigment is sheer to medium but can be layered for more color without emphasizing pores. On my medium skin this pulled quite warm but not so warm that it turns orange. Lasting power is very good – both colors stayed put on the face as well as eyes from early morning into early evening without fading, creasing or oxidizing.

There are six shades of the Soleil Clutch-Size Lip Balm ($36 each / 0.07 oz). These are limited edition luminous fresh colors perfect for Spring and Summer and made their debut in the first-ever clutch sized Tom Ford Soleil casing. The packaging is the same size as the Lips & Boys color collection (reviewed here) – they come in a small twist-up tube but with the signature Soleil white and gold exterior. At first swipe these have a nice lush, moisturizing element that conditions the lips with a smooth jelly-like formula. Pigment is sheer to light but buildable, covering the lip entirely with a rounded bullet leaving behind a high-gloss shine. You’ll find in the lip swatches below that the colors overall do show up but there is a slight translucent quality to them so you can see just a sheer shroud of your natural lip color underneath. Both have great application without any streaking or patches. Lasting power is about medium at best. As with most tinted lip balm formulas that pack both color and a high-impact shine finish they usually don’t survive quite as long as a traditional lipstick formula but they still last a relatively acceptable amount of time. I like that these don’t disappear immediately like some other primarily-based sheer formulas do.

A look at the color selection and descriptions as I see them.

Cruising – is a cool medium pink with a hint of fuchsia undertones
L’Odissea – is a warm coral with peach/orange undertones

Swatched on the lips. For skin tone reference, I am not wearing any foundation and am completely barefaced here. My skin tone is medium with pink undertones.

As a die-hard Tom Ford fanatic I absolutely love these and deem them must-haves if you have an affinity for all things Tom Ford like myself. All three perform really well in terms of texture, pigment and color with the overall formulas being on-point with that of all TF beauty products. If I could recommend anything from the three items I purchased, I’d definitely say go for the highlighter palette – you won’t be disappointed, the glow is real and borderline orgasmic.

There are a few more items in the Summer Soleil 2017 collection. Aside from 4 more Soleil Clutch-Size Lip Balm shades, there are 3 The Ultimate Bronzer color varieties, 2 new Cream and Powder Eye Color in Young Adonis and Sun Worship. Also included is the Soleil Afterglow Contouring Compact and Solar Exposure Eye & Cheek Palette, a new Bronzing Brush as well as a Bronzing Gel.
