Tom Ford Lip Contour Duo | Dream Obscene, Fling It On & Public Display

February 7, 2017

This month Sephora has launched quite a few new and existing Tom Ford lip products, among them are the Tom Ford Lip Contour Duo ($53 / 0.08 oz/ 2.37 mL) which were previously from his AW16 Color Collection that I assume have become permanent. There are eight shades of the Lip Contour Duo available and come in luminous fresh neutral colors perfect for both Spring and Summer – albeit they were released during the Fall, you can really wear these year round. These are described as:

“A dual-ended lipstick and shaping tool—with Tom Ford innovation that meets lip artistry—for full, long-lasting coverage. On one end of the Lip Contour Duo, it features a slim and sleek pencil with a lip shaper to enhance and define lips. On the opposite end is a full-coverage, slim stick with a lip color concealed inside. Use the lighter shade of lip shaper together with the deeper lip color to add dimension, shape, and impart an ombré effect on your lips. It’s ideal for seamlessly flaunting a subtle contour to high-definition lip look.”

Each Lip Contour Duo has a lip shaping liner on one end and a creamy lipstick on the other. The liners match the lip color and both are full coverage. On first swipe the liners felt on the stiff side and I found the initial introduction to the formula to be a bit drying. In fear of breaking the tips by way of tugging, I decided to prep my lips with a primer (you can also use a balm for this step) and applied using short, feathering strokes. This, I found, is the best way to use the liners as opposed to on straight bare lips and in one sweeping motion. The liners contain tiny glitter flecks but are so subtle that you barely notice it. These also have a matte finish. I like to use the liners to shape and define my lips first, then fill in the entire lip area as a base layer which extends the lasting power of the corresponding lip color to almost twice as long. Not to mention, my lips look much more full and plumper.

The lip colors are full coverage creams. They are housed in a slim twist-up tube and have amazing smooth application gliding across the lips without any streaks or tugging. Texture is silky and creamy. While they are full coverage they don’t have that thick consistency and are in fact quite weightless. There’s a noticeable hydrating feel that makes lips appear lush and wear very comfortable once on, even in combination with the lip liners which are slightly drying. I was completely blown away by how hydrating, smooth and pigmented the formula overall is. On their own, lasting power is medium at best – however, when layered with the liners they stay put for an incredibly long time.

A look at the colors I picked up

Dream Obscene – reads to me as a cool medium mauvey pink
Fling it On – reads to me as a warm peachy pink with what appears to be hints of coral
Public Display – reads to me as a warm beige nude with peachy/brown undertones

Swatched on the arm (lip liner on the left / lipstick on the right)

Swatched on the lips. For skin tone reference, I am not wearing any foundation and am completely barefaced here. My skin tone is medium with pink undertones.

As someone who is a huge fan of Tom Ford Beauty, I, as anyone else who shares my passion, can vouch that his products are some the best on the market and in a class of their own. Especially his lip products. The prices are among the highest in the beauty industry and definitely a luxurious splurge that are often difficult to justify but in my opinion and experience, the overall quality in terms of formula, texture, color deposit/payoff and longevity there’s simply nothing like them and they are so worth it. The Lip Contour Duo shades I picked up are once again solid performers and I find every color just perfect. The formula is long-lasting and they have great pigment. While the liner side needs some tweaking due to its general dryness, the lipstick side are among the creamiest formulas I’ve tried to date with full coverage in literally one swipe.

The Tom Ford Lip Contour Duo are available at Sephora, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and TomFord.com.
