MAC Cosmetics Nutcracker Sweet Holiday Collection | Sweet Nude Mini Lipstick Kit – Sweet Nude Mini Lip Gloss Kit

For the holidays this year MAC Cosmetics launched the limited edition Nutcracker Sweet Holiday Collection. Season after season, the iconic brand churns out perhaps the most covetable makeup releases broadcasting a wide range of unique products with collector’s item-worthy designs to match. MAC has been absolutely killing it this year with capsules (think Star Trek, Selena) and for the 2016 holiday season they have bestowed Nutcracker Sweet upon us. Inspired by the story of the Nutcracker, confectionery and whimsical hues of pink, plum, bronze and gold beautifully don one of MAC’s most massive collections to date covering everything from the eyes down to the lips guaranteeing something lovely to be discovered for everyone. I purchased the Sweet Nude Lipstick Kit and Sweet Nude Lip Gloss Kit on the release date and today I am sharing thoughts and swatches on both.

Up first is the Sweet Nude Lipstick Kit ($35). The kit contains four miniature-sized lipsticks (0.06 oz each) with shades selected from MAC’s permanent range and are housed in a small stylish box with a plastic pullout drawer very convenient for storage. After I received this kit I made a trip out to the MAC boutique in Town Square to swatch and analyze the individual permanent versions for any differences in color or formula. It is not unusual that for a re-promotion either the formula or color is a little off from the permanent ones but I can securely state that the mini shades were very consistent with those of the permanent line in both facets. As a neutral lip lover that is very reserved with bolder or deeper adaptations even of the term “nude”, I in fact did appreciate that this specific nude kit encompassed a greater variety of neutral colors described as “lush toffee brown shades”.

These performed really well as the quality is of uniform. Texture is very lightweight and they are non-drying. Formula and consistency of the minis were on-point with the individual ones and coated the lips evenly and smoothly with medium to full coverage. The colors are super pigmented and pack some serious staying power lasting for a good 3.5 to 4 hours before reapplication became a necessity. Once I swiped on the colors they stay put without bleeding or budging and remained to look fresh for quite some time after application. Some of the color will of course transfer to a cup or straw but for the most part stayed true.

A look at the color selection:

Creme Cup – is described as a light blue pink but to me reads as a light-medium pink with neutral undertones and runs slightly on the cool side although not too much. Has a cremesheen finish.
Nouvelle Vogue – is described as a soft blue pink but to me reads as a rosy pink with neutral undertones and runs cool. Has a satin finish.
Kinda Sexy – is described as a neutral pinky-rose but to me reads as a medium-deep pinky peach with brown undertones and runs warm. Has a matte finish.
Whirl – is described as a dirty rose but to me reads as a medium-deep brown with pink undertones and runs warm. Has a matte finish.

Up next is the Sweet Nude Lip Gloss Kit ($35). The kit contains four miniature-sized glosses consisting of three Cremesheen Glasses (0.09 oz each) and one Dazzleglass (0.06 oz) which are housed in the same small stylish box with a plastic pullout drawer very convenient for storage. This set includes various tones of “nude” ranging from light to dark which are also described as “lush toffee brown shades” similar to the lipsticks mentioned above. Normally I’m not one for ordering lip glosses sight unseen because I want to get a feel for the formula. There’s absolutely nothing worse than that sticky consistency many glosses tend to carry, and especially when worn on the pout your lips feel almost glued together and garner those gross lines attaching one lip to the other when trying to talk. The Cremesheen Glass minis have a nice creamy and hydrating formula that is by no means tacky which makes them more comfortable to wear. Pigment is sheer and moderately buildable, however, I don’t recommend doing so since the consistency is on the fluid to milkier side and has a tendency to settle into lines becoming oly more emphasized the more you layer. Wear time is close to two hours. Dazzleglass has a creamy and moisturizing formula but is thicker in consistency that applies evenly yet contains a degree of tackiness. Pigment is light to medium with an almost four hour wear time.

Both the Cremesheen Glasses as well as the Dazzeglass performed really well. Across all formulas they applied evenly and smoothly that lasted for quite some time. Pigment is definitely there although not as punchy as the lipsticks. The lightweight textures made them comfortable to wear and almost deep-moisturized the lips throughout. There is some settling of product into the lip lines since the formulas of all are quite fluid and teeter more on the milkier side. Despite their fluidity, product did not slide around or bled over the lip lines and stayed nicely in place throughout wear time.

A look at the color selection:

Fashion Whim – is described as a light beige but to me reads as a light-medium peach with slight orange undertones and runs warm. Contains a degree of very fine pearl.
Nutty & Naughty – is described as a mid-tone pinky brown but to me reads as a deep pink with hints of plum and runs warm. Contains a degree of fine gold pearl.
Pure Delight – is described as a light coral nude but to me reads as a medium coral beige with very light brown undertones that runs warm. Contains a degree of fine pink and gold pearl.
Prancin’ Dancin’ – is described as a copper shimmer but to me reads as a muted soft copper with brown undertones and runs warm. Contains a mix of fine gold and silver pearl.

All-in-all, the lip kits were nothing short of stunning. The overall Nutcracker Sweet Holiday Collection has lots of great options for either gifting to someone else or yourself as it concludes everything from the eyes down to the cheeks and lips. Even brushes! Since this was such an amazing experience I have expanded my wishlist from the collection although many items have been selling out rapidly everywhere because they are limited edition after all. You can find the collection in stores now and online at MAC, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth AvenueBloomingdale’s and other select retailers!
