Tarte Double Duty Beauty Shape Tape Contour Concealer
Tarte released a new permanent concealer to their Double Duty Beauty Collection exclusively available at Ulta for Summer/Fall 2016 called the Shape Tape Contour Concealer ($24 / 0.33 oz). The 6-color range is designed to conceal, correct and brighten the under-eye area, cover acne and redness while softening the look of pores and fine lines. Besides performing like any other ordinary concealer pulling the usual obligated duties, the Shape Tape Contour’s creamy and blendable formula also easily works for highlighting and contouring with the tapered doe-foot wand applicator ideal for precise sculpting and highlighting. The line has been extremely popular ever since its release and has been sold out at my Ulta for almost equally as long, but the shade I wanted was finally in stock on Ulta’s website and I decided to jump to the opportunity to get my little mitts on it. It definitely does not disappoint. According to Tarte the concealers are powered with:
Amazonian clay and conditioning mango seed and shea butters, the nutrient-rich concealer helps promote skin elasticity and illumination with each crease-free application. Besides Amazonian Clay, mango seed and shea butters, the formula also contains skinvigorating ingredients like Sunflower, Peony, Licorice Root and Vitamin E.
Onto my testing results and thoughts. I’ll be quite honest in saying that I had my reservations towards this particular concealer since it has a matte finish. In this previous post about finding the holy grail setting powder, I outlined my general issue with dry under-eye. Dry under-eye + a matte concealer is a volatile combination that I don’t want anything to do with. But, being that this is Tarte and I love the brand, I had to try this concealer and as promised the formula is indeed super creamy and has a hydrating thick consistency across the board. If you have oily skin or oily lids in general, this concealer might just become your best friend as it dries and sets with a matte, long-wearing finish.
These come in a barrel with a tapered doe-foot wand applicator. Thanks to the tapered design it’s really easy to apply product even in the most difficult of areas – think around the eye socket and inner corners. I have only used this as a concealer and I love to apply to it to all the main areas that needs some TLC for an instant brightened effect. The formula is very creamy and hydrating, but is also a little tricky to work with and blend since it dries and sets fairly quickly. You have to move rather fast in order to properly blend product into the skin. The most effective way for me to blend the product without tugging is to use a damp Beautyblender for a seamless finish. Although that it sets with a matte finish, I was really impressed with the fact that no product creased or nested itself into my fine lines, or for that matter looked dry under my eyes. The latter was my biggest worry.
Swatched on the arm:
The Tarte Shape Tape Contour Concealer has made the cut to join my top contenders. It has a nice creamy and hydrating consistency that melts into the areas and becomes like second skin that looks brightened and flawless. Despite its matte finish, never once did it look dry or settle and crease. Pigment is incredible and covers any blemishes or flaws without too much contrast. I got the shade Light because I love a highlighted under-eye and besides adding the right amount of brightness underneath the eyes, it also neutralizes my dark circles without letting them protrude through as the day goes on. Lasting power is definitely good – lasting all day without doing any of the inevitable that we all hate. The formula is a little tricky to work with since it does dry and sets quite quickly, but if you catch it just in time it blends into the skin for a smooth and blurred look that makes skin appear flawless and seamless.
Bottom line: if you’re in the market for a new concealer, I highly recommend you give the Shape Tape Contour a try. It impressed me with its creaseless formula and maximum coverage – I have pretty darkened dark circles under my eye and the fact that it covered and neutralized them without skipping a beat only reeled me in more. It does an amazing job of brightening and camouflaging any imperfections. All-in-all, I hope Tarte does not discontinue this concealer for a very, very long time. 2 Big thumbs up!
