Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara

As part of their Holiday 2015 series, Tarte released the Greatest Glitz Set that at the time was only available at Ulta. The sequined daydream consisted of 3 mini palettes each containing 8 matte + shimmer eyeshadow shades and a blush. Over the December month I actually picked up this reverie of makeup goodness and to this day I still alternate between all 3 palettes on a daily basis. I mean, you can’t go wrong with palettes that balance cool and warm tones channeled through various mattes and shimmers that all kind of hang out in the neutral range. Included in this Holiday gift set was a ample sample size of their Lights, Camera, Lashes™ 4-in-1 Mascara ($21). Most of you know that I have a tendency to never stray that far away from my holy grail tube of black goop Volum’ Express Colossal Mascara by Maybelline ($6.99) – review here -. I have tried in the past to upgrade to better but have never been able to find anything suitable and that cuts it close to the drugstore wonder. That was until I took the Lights, Camera, Lashes™ 4-in-1 Mascara for a test-drive.

People, I’m in love.

Over the past few months I have been delving in the free samples I receive from my makeup purchases, and it’s safe to say that 7 out of 10 times this usually embodies a sample size of a brand’s popular mascara. Depleting a sample or travel size is usually all it takes for me to either be impressed or completely turned off by a hyped mascara or product in general – albeit, sometimes I do discover some new favorites. And Tarte’s popular mainstay was one of those samples I wish would have never run out.

When it comes to my lashes, I’m not particularly picky. They are naturally a little on the curly side swooping upwards all on their own, and with a little help of a lash curler this only enhances that holding a curl like no other. That being said, I do like a lot of volume because I practically never wear any falsies so I seek the most of that falsies effect and portrayal from my mascara choices. For mascara I look for something that does not turn grayish, does not flake or smudge, lasts all day, does not clump, that does not weigh my lashes down so they go from naturally curly to pin-straight, and most importantly of all adds volume. Length is an added bonus but not all mascaras offer that extra perk so it’s welcomed if they do, not necessarily a must.

After testing the Lights, Camera, Lashes™ 4-in-1 Mascara on a consistent daily basis, I definitely discovered a new favorite. First off, the packaging is super cute, very unique, and not something you see too often. Since I do sometimes become quite entranced by pretty casings and compacts, this already was a point up for Tarte. The application brush is that of a common and standard mascara with a tapered design, not too thick and not too thin. I was able to bring the brush to the roots of my lashes so I could boost and tease them for optimal volume without poking my eyeball in the process. The formula is a deep black and it instantly darkened and defined my lashes that resulted in a more fuller look. The first couple of times of using it the consistency was not that smooth and it clumped on the lashes right as I was applying it but I figured out to remove the excess product at the top and now it does not clump anymore. As it thickened my lashes with a true rich black shade, not only did I feel like it added volume but it appeared to extend my lashes which means it does lengthen to a degree. I also felt like it conditioned my lashes and it did not flake for most of my day. I would say that by hour 10 or so (after a full work day and going grocery shopping), that’s when I came home and spotted these tiny micro flecks in my under-eye region. Although, even my Maybelline does this when I wear it for a long time so I kind of weirdly expected it to do so. Also, there was no gray cast to be detected even by that hour which means the lush black formula holds up for the entire day and well beyond.

In terms of the actual application, it’s very easy and effortless. The brush, that of being a standard tapered design, is still my favorite kind because when it’s a good applicator the bristles will attach themselves to the lashes instantly and just glide on without a hitch, getting into those smaller corners. Plus, the price point of a full size is on really on-point as well. Also, it’s a vegan product. So Tarte definitely hit the nail on the head when they created this product.

All-in-all, this mascara blew me away and thoroughly impressed me. I’d even go so far to say that I would actually purchase the full-size version because it just was that good to me. Lights, Camera, Lashes™ 4-in-1 Mascara thickened, defined, and even elongated my lashes. It goes the distance for longevity purposes without the unflattering side-effects of smudging or fading all-together. Tiny flecks by hour 10 but it’s not serious enough to where I would condemn it for doing so – as I said, even my holy grail does it by that hour. The formula remains black and does not turn gray. My lashes don’t become crunchy or fragile to the touch even when I swipe on 2 coats. It simply does everything I want and for that I give it a huge thumbs up. A definite new favorite.
