Besides foundation and a good concealer, mascara is inarguably one of the most important beauty counterparts a woman can own. It’s that perfect pick-me-up even when you really have nowhere serious to go because it just instantly polishes up your face and prepare you to take on whatever the day will throw at you. Basically, mascara is like the red lip of the eyes, no day is so bad it can’t be fixed with a little plumping of the lashes.
Over the years I’ve used a good amount of mascaras, from the drugstore to the premium counters, and nothing ever stood out to me so much that I couldn’t live without it. Results were almost always the same, some were above the norm, others were utter … crap. I’ll use a PG-13 word here. Even from the high-end beauty counters, no real expensive mascara ever took my breath away to the point where I needed to start feeding an expensive habit. Okay except maybe the Yves Saint Laurent’s Volume Effet Faux Cils Mascara and the Lancome Hypnôse Star Mascara – they are quite spectacular. That being said, it’s not financially savvy on my part to constantly fork out over $30 on a tube of mascara every couple of weeks especially for an item that runs out as quickly as a mascara does.
It became my mission to find a drugstore version of aforementioned high-end mascaras. For years I have been a religious Maybelline mascara fanatic. Ever since my very first makeup product that was the iconic Great Lash, I’ve always stuck with them because I seriously enjoy their mascaras, no matter which line it was. When Maybelline released the Volum’ Express Colossal Mascara ($6.99), I decided to give it a try and I can say with a rested heart and every bit of confidence that this is an amazing mascara.
From the first swipe on it is unlike any other drugstore mascara that I have trialed in the past. It adds instant volume and boosts lashes with a blacker than black formula that it almost appears that lashes doubled in numbers. By swipe number two it looks like my lashes have grown in length. What I really love about the formula, which is something that has previously always lacked with others, is that my lashes don’t become nearly as hard with the coatings as others can. You know, to that point where you think if the wind blows too hard that they will break in half? Yeah, this formula has yet to do so with lashes remaining soft even by coat two.
When it comes to mascaras I usually move on quite quickly, but since its release I’m on tube number …. ? I don’t even know, that’s how long I’ve been using it. Granted that pretty much nothing beats the YSL or Lancome mascaras, the Maybelline the Volum’ Express Colossal Mascara comes really close.
